NOTA BENE

I

Dead Spring

From behind

on the road

not a crispy

skittering

leaf

but a tiny

skeletal

five-legged

horse

II

Waves

By the swift river

A man with one arm

Waves

III

Insignificant Ode

If you aspirate a bug

and experience discomfort dislodging it

consider how it must be

for the bug

IV

As Above, So Below

Vultures overhead

Dark dihedral cut-outs

sliding over blue

At life's end, cicadas

Emerge after years underground

Sucking root sap in lightlessness

What do you know?

Sing

V

Snowy Acre

You could see where mouse and fox

had been. Their tracks came together

where both of them --bit it.

VI

As Above, So Below 2

Watching ants

struggle with the great

problems of their day

VII

It Rains

Silence

after rain

reigns

VIII

Suspended Animation

The hinge on the

chicken coop door

has changed its squeak

to a perfect

little cluck

IX

Watering Tobacco

An irrigation gun’s

watery arch appears

      upheld

by miniature rainbows
